Many studies have documented that young maternal age at pregnancy is associated with low birth weight (LBW) in low- and middle-income countries. However, evidence of an association with birth length, postnatal growth, and long-term development is less clear. The studies included in this dissertation examined the associations between young maternal age at pregnancy and birth weight, birth length, change in height from birth to adulthood, and IQ scores at 8.5 years and 11.5 years in first-born children in Cebu, the Philippines. The data analyzed were longitudinal survey data from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS; 1983-2005), which includes information on mothers and their children in Metropolitan Cebu, from pregnancy to approximately 21.5 years. The analyses used continuous (years) and categorized (< 20 years, 20-24 years, and ≥ 25 years) maternal age, and included descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analyses. Multivariate analyses included ordinary least squares regression, a logistic regression model, and a multilevel linear growth model. Young maternal age was not associated with lower birth weight (grams) or increased risk for LBW (< 2,500 g) after controlling for covariates. In fully adjusted models, young maternal age (< 20 years vs. 20-24 years) had only a minimal adverse effect on birth length. Adjusted mean height deficits in children of young mothers continued from birth to 8 years of age and reappeared at 21 years of age, but the differences were small (< 1 cm) (< 20 years vs. 20-24 years). Children of young mothers (< 20 years vs. 20-24 years) had lower adjusted mean IQ scores at 8.5 years than those of older mothers. The findings imply that young maternal age (< 20 years) is associated with childhood cognitive development at 8.5 years but not with birth outcomes or long-term growth in height. The associations found were attenuated or disappeared after controlling for covariates, indicating that an offspring's poor outcome is partially or entirely explained by other maternal characteristics. More effort should be made to improve child development in children born to young mothers. Inequalities in socioeconomic status and poor maternal nutrition status during pregnancy should be addressed when implementing policies and programs for improving birth outcomes, growth, and development. Further research is needed for children of very young mothers (< 16 years), and other confounding factors should be included in the analyses to confirm associations.
