Thesis (M.S.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2011.
This study examined furniture usage by individuals in a university library quiet zone located at the Ralph W. Steen Library on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus in Nacogdoches, TX. The researcher conducted observational research by using an unobtrusive, non-participant method to collect data on individuals using selected furniture in the quiet zone. The sample included 15 male and 26 female individuals using the library on five observation times. Measures and field notes were recorded on the individuals' location, possessions, and activities. Variables collected included whether or not individuals had books or other printed material, laptop computers, or food and drink with them and the activities they were performing such as reading, writing, using cell phones, talking, or sleeping. Computed frequencies indicated that study carrels with chairs and lounge chairs with tablet arms were used more than tables with chairs. Possession of books by individuals was common as well as reading and writing. Females used the library quiet zone area more than males. These data inform future facility redesign, space planning and furniture purchases to maintain the library as a vital place to study.
