The underrepresentation of women in leadership roles in high school athletic departments in Texas is an issue that has been overlooked and under-researched. The reasons as to why women are not in more positions of leadership in high school athletic departments in the state of Texas was the main focus of this research study. The purpose of this research study was to help determine impedances for women looking for advancement in the high school athletic department in the state of Texas and make a recommendation on how to address issues facing women. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with athletic directors, athletic coordinators, assistant athletic coordinators and head coaches that worked in high school athletic departments. The semi-structured interview was used with structured and unstructured questions in an interview to help clarify and further expand on the issue of why there are so few women in leadership positions in high school athletic departments. The interview questions helped to focus on reasons and the perceived reasons for the last of women in leadership roles in high school athletics in the state of Texas. Questions were asked about career paths and obstacles facing women in advancement along with experience and career goals. The perceived ideas and rationales as to why women are not advancing as fast as their male counterparts was the focus of the questions during the interviews. A summarization of the main points, patterns, and themes of the data was used to help code and explain the data gathered from the interview data. Similarities, patterns, and themes gather during the interview process was coded and analyzed to try and determine if there is a central reason or reasons to the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles in high school athletic departments. The lack of women in leadership positions is an issue facing our high school athletic departments currently even after the implantation of Title IX. The gap in the research in this area further demonstrates the necessity for this study.
