Over the course of the last decade, increasing students' academic achievement on standardized tests and successful completion of their high school curriculum have become the major focus of educators and education stakeholders at the local, state, and national levels. Educational stakes are high and continue to become more stringent with the increase in number and frequency of standardized tests. Although all who serve the school and its students must contribute to students' success, one member of the school who is often overlooked is the school librarian. This study was designed to add to the literature about the importance of schools having a state-certified librarian to contribute to student learning and positively impact students' standardized achievement test performance. The purpose of this study was to determine if the integration of a state-certified teacher-librarian impacted students' achievement on the ACT Reading component of the ACT and on their research paper scores in English III. A quantitative study was conducted utilizing an ANCOVA. Data from 80 junior students at a small, rural, public high school were collected to answer the research questions. The researcher ran the data analysis with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) using an ANCOVA, covariance of analysis. Two key findings of the study were determined. The first key finding of the study was that there was no significant difference in the scores of junior students on the ACT Reading component of the ACT who were instructed by a state-certified teacher-librarian and those who were not instructed by a state-certified teacher-librarian. The second key finding of the study was that there was a significant difference in the research paper scores of the junior students who were instructed by a state-certified teacher-librarian in the English III course and those who were not instructed by a state-certified teacher-librarian. Findings showed the research paper scores of the junior students instructed by a state-certified teacher-librarian were significantly higher than the research paper scores of the junior students instructed by a secondary English teacher. The implications of the study involve administrators who face decisions when making budgeting cuts that involve eliminating certified positions such as state-certified librarians. This study is also important to state-certified librarians who must explain their roles in the school and their potential contributions to students' academic achievement. As the demand for increased academic achievement continues to grow, all education stakeholders must determine how to best serve all students' academic needs in order to increase academic achievement, to enhance the school's current curriculum, and to aid in improving students' future success in their continuing education or entrance into the workforce.
