The lack of alignment between business and IT strategy has led to many organizations not realizing the anticipated value from IT investments. As opposed to considering it as a support function, IT strategy should be considered as the enabler of the business strategy. Using the findings from literature, the key elements of the business and IT strategy alignment were identified. As its foundation, the research uses the enabling and inhibiting elements considered by the three strategic alignment frameworks and the IT risk categories from the 4A risk framework. The four types of IT risk defined in the 4A framework are Availability, Access, Accuracy and Agility. The research aimed to identify and articulate the risk of misalignment of IT and business strategy in large financial institutions. Since the objective was to improve risk management practice through naturalistic inquiry and content analysis, a qualitative approach was used. The risk impact from the elements of misalignment of IT and business strategy is understudied, and this research aimed to provide more insights about identifying and articulating such risks. The research discovered a theory grounded in information from the participants to identify and articulate risks from misalignment and to improve risk management practices using a qualitative exploratory approach. The risk optimization pyramid, the risk from misalignment-cause and effect conceptual model, and a risk impact process map developed from the research data, provide the management of large financial institutions a baseline to identify, assess, and manage risks and achieve their business outcomes. The research contributes to an area understudied in academic literature, the risk of misalignment of IT and business strategy, and provides recommendations for future research.
