Hawaii ranks number one for the highest real estate costs in the United States. This fact alone forces my generation into a dilemma when thinking about our first steps into home ownership. Investigations will be conducted as to what is causing this constant rise starting with the history of home making in Hawaii, from the hale pili and utilitarianism but to its current status as of 2018, looking specifically at materiality and construction methods. Hawaii's limited local resources result in the islands dependence on importing building materials ranging from lumber to steel and everything in between. To combat the massive carbon footprint brought on by the import of building materials I will investigate what local options can be utilized as a primary material for single family home construction, looking at its structural and thermal qualities but most importantly its availability. This research will result in the conclusion that the best local building material, that will also boost the local economy, is locally sourced basalt concrete. Based on a school of thought created by precedential research, a basic design that is responsive to Hawaii's unique climate and encourages growth over time will be developed. The basic design will be proposed to the local basalt concrete manufacturers and together we will devise a real-life structural approach to its construction that will utilize the qualities of the material while being cost efficient. In order to ground the project into reality, I will research and propose improvements to an existing Department of Hawaiian Home Lands development plan that reinforce the design goals of the new single-family home design. This dissertation will result in the design of new single-family home that will be constructed using local materials developed by local companies. A breathing home will support and encourage growth for my generation and the generations to follow.
