Dementia continues to remain a disabling and a terminal health condition that affects both cognitive and physical functioning capabilities of individuals with the disorder. The mainstay and focused therapy of choice in managing associated behavioral disturbances of this disorder has been the use of antipsychotics. There have been different models designed in the past years to manage the complexity of the disorder. The most pressing challenge in the management of the disease process is how to work with caregivers and providers with the wrongly assumed neurobehavioral symptoms of the disease with antipsychotics. Of great importance to clinical contributions is early detection, treatment of the disease is for appropriate management. This has improved with most up to date advancement in research. This fact as reported by numbers of clinical trials and discovery of drug regimen and therapies. Also noted is providing education about the disease process, the stages and support for families of individuals with dementia related behavioral disturbances. To promote good quality of life to these patients, eliminating the use of antipsychotics has been the ongoing concerns for most insurance payer sources and the centers for Medicare and Medicaid. This class of atypical antipsychotic drug is associated with 60%-70% increase in death (Kirkham, 2015). Aromatherapy is oil based essential oil that can be used to affect the brain and the body thereby promoting sleep and improving behavioral disturbances related to dementia (Press-Sandler, 2016).
