Longitudinal research regarding the emotional aspect of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is limited. This study explored how emotional experiences changed over time according to weblogs written by people living with AD. Purposeful sampling was used to identify weblogs (N = 9) that had been contributed to over four years or longer. Five blog posts each year from years one, two, and four were analyzed from each weblog. Computerized content analysis was conducted using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC2105) to detect changes in emotion in language used over time. Qualitative analysis was concurrently conducted using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore how the meaning of emotional experiences changed over time. The quantitative and qualitative results were triangulated. Quantitative analysis detected a significant decrease (p < .05) in negative emotions in parallel to a non-significant increase in positive emotions in the weblogs from years two to four. Three superordinate themes emerged using IPA: The Ever-Present Unpleasant Arrive and Thrive, Making Room, and Living a Significant Life. According to weblogs written over a four-year period by people living with AD, negative emotions were copious, however, through acceptance, adapting and coping, positive emotions continued to be experienced and contributed to living a meaningful life. This study supports previous research indicating preserved emotion in people living with AD and challenges current stigmas associated with the disease. Future research should further explore positive emotions experienced while living with AD. The results suggest that weblogs provide viable data for longitudinal and mixed methods research in AD.
