The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which characteristics of innovation, quality improvement, patient and family engagement, and knowledge generation are perceived to be present in learning health care systems (LHCSs). The researcher subsequently determined how the presence of these four characteristics differs between LHCSs and non-LHCSs. Multiple problems are intertwined throughout the U.S. health care system. Problems that can be addressed with LHCSs include increasing: (a) safety, (b) quality, (c) accessibility, (d) efficiency, and (e) interprofessional collaboration. The reduction of the total cost of care, medical errors, and fraud can be accomplished with an LHCS approach. This researcher conducted a quantitative study on LHCSs using a field survey and descriptive statistics to inform findings. Findings were assessed within the context of Rogers' (2003) diffusion of innovation theory. The survey instrument evaluated the extent to which characteristics of innovation, quality improvement, patient and family engagement, and knowledge generation are present in LHCSs. This researcher identified important characteristics of innovation, quality improvement, patient and family engagement, and knowledge generation present in LHCSs and how the presence of these four characteristics differs between LHCSs and non-LHCSs.
