The widespread shortage of professional mental health providers in the United States has made access to mental health care a social and health problem. This shortage is particularly notable in the Southern rural region. The integration of e-mental health services into underserved areas is one measure to address unmet mental health needs. The purpose of this community-based participatory research (CBPR) study was to explore the stakeholders' perceptions of e-mental health services as a means for meeting the mental health needs in a Southern rural community. The stakeholders were the residents, clergy members, and mental health professionals. The 12 participants were recruited through snowball sampling. The participants were African Americans who ranged in age from 21 through 62, with 50% being between the ages of 30 and 55. The generic qualitative inquiry approach was used to collect the introspective data through two audiotaped focus groups. The first focus group was comprised of eight residents, and the second focus group was comprised of two clergy members, one social worker, and one counselor. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Four themes emerged from the data analysis and were identified as (a) convenient, (b) impersonal, (c) pragmatic, and (d) skeptical.
