There is a growing number of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease every year. Oftentimes, family members assume the role of caregiving when their loved one cannot function appropriately on their own as the dementia progresses and their cognitive abilities worsen. As a result, this qualitative research sought to explore the experiences of female family members as they have assumed the role of caregiving for a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Six participants were asked open-ended questions designed to elicit responses that explained their experiences caring for a loved one with dementia. The research participants were identified as the primary caregivers for their loved one whether they were providing in home care or were the primary contact for the nursing care facility for which their loved one resided. Research participants' loved ones were formally diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and the primary caregiver caring for the care recipient was a female who was caring for their loved one for at least one year. The findings indicated that caregiving does contribute to life changes in several domains of functioning. Findings also identified positive experiences that acted as a rewarding experience and that many caregivers utilized the experience to maintain or enhance health-related behaviors and self-care activities to focus on their own health despite time-consuming responsibilities. Finally, findings also revealed that education and support is crucial for family caregivers.
