Background: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in school-age children in Thailand has been steadily increasing. Obesity has both immediate and enduring effects on the physical, social, and emotional health of children. The primary purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine whether a 4-week pedometer intervention program would increase physical activity self-efficacy and physical activity in Thai school-age children compared with a control group. Methods: The sample included 80 children from fourth to sixth grades including 8-13 year olds. The four-week intervention consisted of the use of a pedometer and one weekly session of a 45-minute dance or Thai running games. Students in the control group received only the Thai government manual about child physical activity. Perceived physical activity self-efficacy was measured by the Perceived Self-Efficacy of Physical Activity Scale. Physical activity was measured by the Physical Activity Questionnaire. Child report of physical activity self-efficacy and physical activity was obtained from both groups at baseline and follow-up (1 and 2 months). Two-way mixed ANOVA was used for data analysis. Results: There were significant changes in physical activity self-efficacy scores over time, F(1.30, 97.65) = 7.18, p = .005. Change in physical activity self-efficacy scores in the intervention group was significantly greater than those in the control group at one month, F(1, 78) = 6.11, p = .016, and two months , F(1, 75) = 12.72, p = .001. The intervention also generated statistically significant changes in physical activity scores, over time, F(1.74, 127.22) = 8.71, p = .001. Change in physical activity scores in the intervention group were significantly greater than those control group at one month, F(1, 78) = 13.871, p = .000, but not at two months , F(1, 74) = 2.12, p = .149. Conclusion: This intervention contributes to the body of knowledge about physical activity interventions. This approach may help children in fourth grade to sixth grade develop healthy behaviors that may improve their long term health if sustained. Further study should include a larger sample size, longer duration of intervention and follow-up, and parental participation.
