Spirituality and yoga are both topics of interest in the psychological community, yet there is a lack of information that looks at how one may affect the other. This qualitative study investigated the potential effects of yoga teacher training on participants' spiritual development. Nine participants completed a demographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview, as well as a self-report measure, titled "Daily Yoga Practice Questionnaire," developed by the researcher. The sample consisted of two males and seven females who had completed a 200-hour in-person yoga teacher training. A phenomenological analysis was utilized to analyze the data. The findings revealed 17 themes within five categories. The five categories were: (a) factors that drew participants to yoga teacher training; (b) changes in spiritual identity; (c) spiritual factors in yoga teacher training, implementation and interpretation of yoga philosophy; (d) areas identified in personal growth; and (e) areas identified in community connectivity. This study found that through the teachings of yoga philosophy, individuals may experience an increase in spirituality. Those who previously identified with a religion reported a stronger connection with their religion. Those who did not identify with a religion reported an increase in overall spirituality and a connection with a higher power. The findings further reported increases in gratitude, meditation, self-acceptance, coping skills, and altruism. This study provides insight into how yoga philosophies could be included in therapy when a client is seeking spiritual growth.
