Complementary and alternative therapies have gained a growing interest among families of children with intellectual disabilities. Medical and allied health fields have been observing and studying this phenomenon in health industry, however, the counseling profession has limited research that focuses on complementary and alternative therapies. This study is a purposeful attempt to expand on existing literature and contribute to research and scholarship in the field of counseling. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the perspectives of counselors towards the use of complementary and alternative therapies (CAT) for children with intellectual disabilities. The methods used to explore the perspectives were focus groups, individual interviews and critical incidence responses. Results of this study revealed six themes relating to the perspectives of counselors'- they are (a) confidence in CAT; (b) increased parental involvement in CAT; (c) CAT is calming and relaxing ;(d) building productive relationships; (e); professional development; and (f) creating a safe space for children with intellectual disabilities. Recommendations for further research and implications to the field of counselor education and supervision are discussed.
