Adolescent suicide is an enduring public health problem (McKinnon et al., 2016; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2010). One of the most salient issues associated with adolescent suicidality is the maintenance of confidentiality within the therapeutic relationship. Although obligations of confidentiality are well known among psychologists, many are confused about how to uphold confidentiality when ethical and legal guidelines conflict (Kampf et al., 2008). Knowledge regarding the extent to which psychologists disclose adolescent reported suicidality and the factors that influence disclosure is limited (Klaus, Mobilio, & King, 2009). The present study utilized a set of 10 vignettes reflective of the five American Psychological Association (APA) General Ethical Principles of Psychologists to explore disclosure of adolescent suicidality. Descriptive statistics, spearman correlations, ordinary least squares regression, t-tests, and analysis of variance were used to assess factors that influence the disclosure of adolescent suicidality by licensed psychologists. Results revealed that endorsing cognitive behavioral or behavioral as one's therapeutic modality predicted disclosure of adolescent suicidality, as did identifying as a clinical psychologist. Results also revealed that there was a significant effect of primary work setting on total disclosure of adolescent suicidality. Possible implications of the general ethical principles are examined. Implications for the education, training, and practice of psychologists are discussed.
