The purpose of this study is to investigate the missional implications of 'integrated witness,' found through a missional reading of the foot washing narrative in John 13:1-38, for today's evangelical understanding and practice of mission. For this purpose, I engage in a missional hermeneutic of both literal-exegetical and theological interceptions in order to explore the mission of Jesus and his disciples within the structure of both the Fourth Gospel and Jesus's foot washing narrative. Firstly, I discuss how, through sending language and its formulae, John talks about mission as an integrated witness of evangelism and life witness. I argue, 1) when Jesus was sent to this world, he bore witness to the Father through his person and identity, and all deeds, like the sacrificial death and resurrection, as well as through evangelism. That is, Jesus testifies to the Father and his salvific work in the union-relationship; and 2) likewise, the aim of the disciples' sentness not only to proclaim Jesus verbally, but to also bear witness to him through the witness of life in the mutual indwelling, toward both the faith community and the world. Secondly, I discover that the integrated concept of mission is implied in the foot washing narrative. I emphasize that 1) Jesus's symbolic act refers to his unique mission as the sacrificial death for both the believers' purification and their sharing a 'portion' in the mutual indwelling relationship with him, and 2) Jesus's interpretation manifests so that the disciples' witness might include both their lives of sharing Jesus's life-pattern of love and humble service, as well as verbal proclamation in the frame of 'sending' and 'as..., so.' Finally, I propose that today's evangelicals must participate in integrated witness as mission. Through the Lausanne International Conferences (1974, 1989 and 2010), evangelicals understand mission as evangelism and social responsibility within the dichotomous frame. Most recently, evangelicals in the 2010s showed diverse understandings of mission concepts: 1) the priority of evangelism, 2) holistic mission or integral mission, and 3) the missio Dei. I emphasize that evangelical churches should undertake an integrated witness of evangelism and life-witness as the sent community in the unity-relationship with God.
