The thesis of this study is that Ezekiel 40-48 presents its temple as a type. The purpose of Ezekiel 40-48 is not to describe a temple to be physically constructed, either after the exile or in an eschatological future. Instead, clues within the text indicate typological features. The temple Ezekiel 40-48 describes points forward to a heightened fulfillment. In light of this, the study will also show how Ezekiel's temple vision plays an important role in the Old Testament (OT) theology of the temple. The vision advances a theology of the temple as God's means of dwelling with his covenant people beyond a physical structure. According to the Christian canon, this theology is fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, and ultimately fulfilled in the eternal kingdom. The methodology of this study is to use typology to study the typological features within Ezekiel 40-48. Chapter 1 introduces the originality of the proposal, the research problem, and thesis of the study. As to originality, Old Testament theologies and theologies on the temple have given little attention to explaining Ezekiel 40-48. The research problem is how to interpret Ezekiel 40-48. This chapter provides a history of interpretation for the book of Ezekiel, and Ezekiel 40-48 particularly. Scholars generally either see the text as a description of a physical temple intended for construction, or as symbolic in some sense. Beale provides a third view of Ezekiel's vision, seeing it as a real heavenly temple in non-structural form. The claim of this study is that no view presented so far provides a satisfying interpretation. Those arguing for a physical structure do not adequately deal with the symbolic dimensions of the vision. Yet those arguing for a symbolic view appear to ignore aspects of the text that seem very realistic. Therefore, the best way to interpret the passage is under the rubric of typology. A typological study demonstrates the importance of Ezekiel 40-48 in a theology of the temple and OT theology.Chapter 2 describes the methodology of the study, typology. After a brief overview of different views of typology, the study argues for typology as pre-figuration. Additionally, typology is seen as a writing strategy by the author, rather than a reading strategy of the interpreter. Therefore, the study presents several criteria for determining types within the Old Testament text. Criteria include a historical referent, a prophetic indicator, a Steigerung (escalation), ambiguity, epochal institutions, and Old Testament development. Ezekiel 40-48 contains all of these features.Chapter 3 begins the examination of the text of Ezekiel. First, this chapter explores the context of Ezekiel 40-48 within the book of Ezekiel. Ezekiel 11, 20, and 34-37 together show that the temple is placed in a context of eschatology and a renewed covenant. Clues in these text show the possibility of God's presence away from a physical temple. Next, the chapter considers the four main sections of Ezekiel 40-48 that provide keys for interpretation (Ezek 40:1-4; Ezek 43:1-12; Ezek 47:1-12; Ezek 48:35).Chapter 4 continues with exegesis of Ezekiel 40-48. While the previous chapter explores key texts that argue positively for typology, this chapter examines the texts scholars use to argue for a physical construction interpretation. The study examines the features of the building, detailed measurements, and the temple's size. Then the study explores the role of the priesthood, legislation, and sacrificial system. In each section, the work shows that a literal fulfillment presents numerous problems in interpreting certain features of the text. Typology adequately explains these features.Chapter 5 develops the typology of Ezekiel 40-48 through the canon, focusing on the Gospel of John and Revelation 21-22. The Gospel of John presents Jesus as the typological fulfillment of Ezekiel's temple vision. The most direct reference to Ezekiel 40-48 occurs in John 7:37-39. Other texts include John 1:14, John 2:21, John 4:19-24, and John 14:1-3. Revelation 21-22 also shows how Ezekiel's temple is a type of the new heavens and new earth. Revelation 21-22 uses Ezekiel 40-48 heavily to describe the new Jerusalem. Chapter 6, the conclusion, simply provides a summary of the contents of the dissertation. The conclusion reviews the research problem, the solution proposed in the dissertation, and the steps taken to attempt to prove the validity of the solution. Then, the conclusion shows how the dissertation advances the discussion of biblical theology of the temple.
