By Kibreab B. Gudeta, B.Th., Mekane Yesus Theological Seminary, M.Phil., Norwegian School of Theology, M. Div., United Lutheran Seminary A Project Document submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Ministry, at Virginia Union University Virginia Union University, 2020 Dr. Robert Wafawanaka, Associate Professor of Biblical Studies and Old Testament, STVU The purpose of this study is to find a theological and practical solution for the fear of death many Christians experience. This research explores what is behind this fear of death and also looks at what the church can do about it. Many Christians have spiritual distress as a result of fear of death due to the lack of a balanced theological education in the church and awareness in society. It is argued in this document that this can be addressed through the development of a new curriculum with an emphasis on death and dying education. As part of the project, a multi discipline workshop was planned and executed to show that Christian education that incorporates teaching on death and dying can help Christians face death with hope and address the issue of spiritual distress. The result from the survey clearly indicated that this model was the best way to address this concern. This model utilized a workshop that was planned for half day for parishioners of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, MD. During this workshop a Funeral Director, an Attorney, a Hospice RNCM (Registered Nurse Case Manager) and this researcher did a presentation looking at death from various vantage points. This dissertation includes recommendations for churches and church leaders on how to address this issue in their own context.
