Therapists who provide trauma based therapeutic services to undocumented Latinos are repeatedly exposed to traumatic material that may put them at risk of developing vicarious trauma. Cultural Competence and empathy are vital components in any therapeutic relationships, more so when working with this population. Although cultural competence and empathy have been linked to therapeutic success, it has also been linked as risk factors for vicarious trauma. Vicarious trauma can impede the therapist to competently engage in healthy therapeutic relationships that can ultimately hinder therapeutic success. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in therapists' levels of vicarious trauma based on therapists' level of cultural competence and empathy. This study also aimed to examine differences in levels of vicarious trauma between Latino and non-Latino therapists. Multiple regression and independent sample t test were conducted. The results indicated that cultural competence and empathy were not significant predictors of vicarious trauma. The results also indicated a significant difference in vicarious trauma levels between Latino vs. non-Latino therapists.
