This dissertation traces the local impact of free trade on trade's losers in the United States between 1990 and 2017. It starts with an examination of trade's negative economic and social consequences, charting regional decay in terms of unemployment and income, public services and crime, and finally mortality. The dissertation turns to how these socio-economic outcomes influence political preferences among voters, creating increased protectionism, xenophobia, and distrust in government. The dissertation concludes with an analysis of the political outcomes generated by these changes, including voting behavior by constituents, legislative behavior by politicians, and lobbying behavior by firms. These three essays trace the links in the causal chain connecting free trade to politics in the United States and speak to the broader populism wave spreading across advanced industrial democracies.
