Using hermeneutic methodology, this thesis asks, how will the increasing acceptance of same-sex marriage in the modern world influence the transformation of the Christian God-image, traditionally a patriarchal image with strict prohibitions against homosexuality? Carl Jung's ideas about archetypes, the transcendent function, and the collective unconscious could provide an alternative myth for same-sex marriage, giving the revolutionary, historical event a psychological, archetypal grounding. The likelihood of the emergence of a new, more integrative God-image is established through an investigation of marriage and culture through the lenses of mythology, religious studies, and analytical psychology. The clinical application of these findings to psychotherapy is to provide a spiritual, mythological context to gay marriage, which would help religious or otherwise conscientious LGBT patients who feel a dissonance between their desire to get married and their faith. This study shows that marriage norms and religious creeds may evolve through time, but love is what is really timeless.
