The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain a better understanding of financial crisis in the mortgage banking industry and to learn from financial leaders the most effective risk management measures and controls with the goal to prevent future financial crises such as the one experienced in 2008. The study involved analyzing the existing practices of risk management among seven executive bankers and bank auditors in Orange County, California that influenced their best practices in the mortgage banking industry. Three themes emerged from the semi-structured interviews that supported the primary research question and three sub-questions. Theme 1: Building Trust and Lasting Relations and Understanding Risks; Theme 2: Auditor is Responsible for Measuring Risks and Performance for Decisions; Theme 3: Strong Policies and Procedures in Support of Regulations. Findings from the analysis included several best risk management practices for financial leaders to mitigate mortgage banking financial crisis. Recommendations for future research included replicating this study through quantitative data analysis and comparing the results.
