The overall goal of this dissertation project was to examine the influence that Disney Princess films, their depictions of princess characters, and various values embedded in the films have on the perceptions of adolescent girls who have been heavy viewers of the films in their lives. This qualitative dissertation explored, through face-to-face interviews, the perceptions and values of 30 adolescent girls between the ages of 12 and 17 who were heavy viewers of the Disney Princess films. This study's findings indicate that these girls perceptions of the Disney Princesses and Disney Princess films deviate from what some previous scholars of the films have observed in the films' content and what they inferred would influence young viewers in certain ways. The findings of this study suggest that these adolescent girls (a) are greatly influenced by Disney Princesses and Disney Princess films, (b) believe that they can achieve any goal they set for themselves, without regard to gender, (c) have a positive body image and accept themselves and their bodies as they are, and (d) understand that long-lasting relationships take work to maintain.
