The world population was approximately 2.5 billion people in 1950 and is predicted to reach 9.8 billion by 2050. Thus, it has been estimated that by the year 2050 there will be 2 billion people aged 60 years and older worldwide. Currently, in the United States, one in eight Americans is aged 65 and older. This trend is significant and warrants more attention since memory problems and activities of daily living (ADL) will necessitate interventions to increase the quality of life (QOL) in future older adult populations. Studies have shown that the most significant factor in successful active-aging is through exercise as a key to longevity. Through the lens of social constructivism, this qualitative study involved interviews with 6 healthy older adults (age 65 and older) who participated in in exercise though folk dance classes. The study explored the positive and negative experiences that folk dancing provides for the class participants (before, during, and after class). Positive effects and experiences from folk dance class participation were discovered in emotional, social, mental, and physical areas. Information gathered in this study could have significant implications such as how dance and exercise can keep older adults happy, healthy, and fit. Psychologists, social workers, medical doctors, and physical therapists who are working with the older population can benefit from the knowledge that folk dance can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience for their patients/clients.
