The purpose of this study was to find similarities in the career path themes of women who have successfully broken through the stained glass ceiling of women leaders in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., Inc. (PC(USA)). The researcher desired to ascertain the characteristics that have enabled women in the PC(USA) to break through to senior leadership at all levels of the organization, paying particular attention to the trait of grit and its role in career path trajectory. This research is significant because it augments the existing work in the PC(USA) regarding the scarcity of women in leadership roles. This study may prove instrumental in shaping policy and practice for the organization, facilitating the removal of barriers and cultivating the emergence of females into higher echelons of leadership. While there is a myriad of literature on the dearth of women in higher levels of leadership across many organizations, this research study fills a significant gap by examining policies and practices that can be implemented by a church organization to foster advancement of women into senior levels of leadership. A review of the literature confirmed the existence of a glass ceiling, yielding suggestions for common best practices to minimize its effects. The methodology employed a mixed-methods embedded convergent design, where quantitative data results from the Short Grit-S survey were embedded in a qualitative process using semi-structured interviews of 13 women in senior levels of leadership within the PC(USA). The study participants demonstrated high levels of grit. Common themes and subthemes included biases and stereotypes concerning gender, race, and age; tenacity, including the drive to pursue the right path and a nonlinear career path; balance of family/career, self-care, and choosing battles; collaboration in supporting others and celebrating diversity; and inspiration, which includes a sense that the participants believe that they have been personally called to fulfill God's mission.
