This study attempts to use motivation constructs to explain the motivation of older adults to engage in physical activity. PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study was to examine motivation and motivation factors to engage in physical activity in persons 50 years and older who participated in the 2017 Nebraska Senior Games (NSG). METHOD: Participants in the 2017 NSG were asked to complete the 40-item Physical Activity and Leisure Motivation Scale (PALMS) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF). PALMS is a validated assessment tool used to classify a person's motivation to be physically active based on eight motivation constructs (competition, appearance, others expectations, affiliation, physical condition, psychological, mastery, and enjoyment). The IPAQ-SF requires individuals to report weekly amount of time spent engaged in three intensities of physical activity (walking, moderate, and vigorous). The ratings of motivation were then compared to the amount of time spent engaging in physical activity. RESULTS: Significant findings were present through this study and suggest older adults who partake in physical activity are motivated due to enjoyment, mastery, and affiliation. Other strong correlations were found between physical activity and motivation constructs but associations were not significant. CONCLUSION: Older adults are motivated differently compared to younger adults. These differences create variance that may contribute to physical activity patterns. The findings of this study suggest that different life components, such as age, gender, retirement status, and community type, have different influences on older adults motivation to engage in physical activity.
