The purpose of this study was to determine if there were significant differences in student-athletes' preferences of a coaches' leadership style based on the athletes' gender, the coaches' gender, whether the sport is played independently or interdependently, and whether the athletes affiliation was influenced by institutions identified as faith-based or non-faith-based. The Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS; Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980) was used in collecting data. The preference version of the LSS was administered to ( n = 750) student-athletes competing in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) during the fall 2017 and winter 2018 academic year. Independent t-tests were used to test for significance and determine the preferred leadership style as outlined by the LSS. Cronbach's alpha was set at (α = 0.05), and descriptive statistics revealed that positive feedback and training and instruction were most preferred by both genders of student athletes, while autocratic behavior was the least preferred by both genders. The results also showed a preference of democratic behavior for student-athletes competing in interdependent sports, which had not been found in previous studies. An understanding of the preferred leadership styles of student-athletes in the WHAC will enable coaches to more effectively motivate student-athletes, improve their performance, and increase their satisfaction in the sport.
