The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences and perceptions of cultural intelligence by intercollegiate coaches at a Division I college or university. This study provided a descriptive account exploring the perceptions of a purposive sample of 10 Division I intercollegiate coaches, recounting lived experiences regarding intercollegiate coaches' understanding of cultural intelligence, the influence on student-athletes performance and conduct on and off the field. The data was generated via semi-structured interviews. Moustakas' (1994) modified van Kaam methodology was adhered to in analyzing the data. Six themes were extracted from the data: (1) Perception of cultural intelligence by coaches; (2) Trust for coaches among student athletes; (3) Conscious practice of cultural intelligence by coaches; (4) Leadership influence of coaches; (5) Behavioral modifications of coaches; and (6) Cultural confidence of coaches. The participants' of this study expressed how cultural intelligence is essential to success as a coach and necessary for sustainable relationships with student athletes. The data also suggests that the capacity to recognize a student athlete's cultural identity has a powerful influence on how that student athlete makes decisions, behaves, defines situations, and thinks.
