The English studies field is surrounded by constant debates and controversy regarding the teaching of English, which increases when non-native speakers of English enter the scene as English teachers. Currently, there are numerous debates examining the ability of those academically prepared to teach English simply relying on a single characteristic: being non-native or native speakers of English. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore how graduates of a master's program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at a university in the Midwest of the United States, who are non-native English speakers, describe their experiences as instructors of university-level English composition courses. Of special interest will be skills and competencies that participants report developing during or as a result of their graduate study. Overall, the ultimate idea would be to establish a conclusion that mitigates the current debate questioning the ability to teach English of those academically prepared for that purpose, based on their characteristic as non-native speakers of English.
