In the study of the seal and clerical scripts of Chinese calligraphy, most scholars have hitherto been making use of visual analysis to look into the artistic features and stylistic development of the two script-forms. However, in the case of Qing calligraphy, there were literati who cared very little about calligraphic styles even though they made exclusive devotion to the seal and clerical scripts. They were fond of using the two ancient scripts, despite their difficulty in reading, in book covers, painting colophons, letters, name cards and other forms of daily writing, thus forming an interesting cultural phenomenon. Among these literati, Master Quyuan, the late-Qing scholar Yu Yue (1821-1907), makes an emblematic case. He had not only produced a large number of seal and clerical calligraphic works, many of which have survived, but were also known for his preference for the clerical script in writing letters. As a result, he has been praised as a celebrated calligrapher who was good at the seal and clerical scripts, and eventually been regarded as one of the "Stele-school calligraphers". However, Yu always felt ashamed of his ignorance of calligraphic knowledge, and his scholarly works rarely touch the subject of calligraphy. Even in his studies of Han clerical script, the focus is on the texts rather than calligraphic beauty. Yet, although not rich in calligraphic techniques, his handwriting and calligraphy were still widely valued for their embodiment of Yu Yue's scholarship in Confucian classics and philology. In the eyes of many Qing critics, "erudition" is the greatest value of seal- and clerical-script works, and this is why Yu Yue's works, no matter whether they are ordinary handwriting or calligraphy, were highly regarded by his contemporaries. By means of analyzing the textual and visual materials relating to Yu Yue's handwriting and calligraphy, this research argues that the seal and clerical scripts as an symbol of orthodoxy and authenticity of Chinese character had played a crucial role in defining the identity of the elites and constructing their academic community, and this social function had given the two ancient scripts a much more prestigious position than other scripts in the Qing dynasty. Moreover, this thesis also proves that calligraphy was not necessarily an art form for self-amusement or self-expression, but rather it could be a symbol of cultural identity. Specifically, it was not the aesthetic taste or style but the script-form itself that distinguished a social group from another. In short, by looking into the case of Yu Yue, this research aims to elucidate the status and social functions of the seal and clerical scripts, the criteria for the designation of a "calligrapher", and the multifaceted perspectives of the art of calligraphy.
