The purpose of this quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional research study was to examine if middle managers' emotional intelligence predict transformational leadership behaviors, together and separately. Middle managers (n = 57) between the ages of 30 and 70 years old in the Northeast United States were randomly selected. The trait emotional intelligence theory was the theoretical foundation for this study. Data were collected using the Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ-i) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ 5X). Simple linear regression was used to assess if emotional intelligence statistically significantly predicted transformational leadership and each subscale of transformational leadership which included, idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. The findings revealed a statistically significant relationship between the middle managers' trait emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, F(1, 55) = 31.03, p < .001, idealized influence, F(1, 55) = 24.12, p < .001, inspirational motivation, F(1, 55) = 33.26, p < .001, intellectual stimulation, F(1, 55) = 20.58, p < .001, and individualized consideration, F(1, 55) = 12.56, p < .001. Total emotional intelligence scores from the EQ-i and total transformational leadership scores and the scores from each of the transformational leadership subscales from the MLQ 5X were used. Future studies may want to replicate this research by using a larger sample size, incorporating more specific demographic data, as well as employing different design methodologies.
