National nursing shortages have created challenges for nursing education and the demand for clinical placements and clinical faculty is high. A significant number of preceptors are needed across a variety of patient care settings where students gain necessary clinical experience. The literature indicates that staff nurses in the clinical setting are frequently dissatisfied in their role as preceptor. When dissatisfaction occurs among staff nurses, the attitudes toward student nurses may be less than positive. This can negatively impact the clinical learning environment and the experience of the student nurse. In recognition of the strong influence of the staff nurse on student nurses and the clinical learning environment, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of the staff nurses in their informal, day-to-day role as preceptor to pre-licensure nursing students in the clinical learning environment. Examining the perceived experience of the staff nurse as preceptor aided in gaining a deeper understanding of the dynamics of role identity and its impact on the student-preceptor relationship within the context of the clinical learning environment. A qualitative research approach using hermeneutic phenomenological methodology explored this relationship from the perspective of the staff nurse through the lens of Wenger's Community of Practice Model.
