Language brokering is a significant activity used by immigrant families for their settlement, survival, adjustment, and integration in a new land. Narrative inquiry and narrative analyses were used to explore the experience and meaning of language brokering among nine 20 to 25-year-old Canadian Chinese participants who had been child language brokers for their parents in Toronto. Interviews were recorded and transcribed, and themes were coded from the transcripts. The narratives revealed intense emotions and contradictions in participants' experiences of language brokering. The participants articulated feelings of pride in helping their parents to navigate their new environment, as well as feelings of incompetence, indebtedness, stress, guilt, and shame when facing adult-like responsibilities and their parents' expectations and disempowerment. The narratives also revealed the participants' struggle and the relational impasse in the role reversals that inevitably occurred in language brokering. This study sheds light on the influence that traditional Chinese culture and the Chinese immigrant family context has on child language brokers. This study gives voice to young Chinese child language brokers who contribute to their immigrant parents' lives in the new country and act as a bridge between the East and the West in the societies in which they live.
