As has been pointed out by many scholars, in Pre-Qin Chinese, the semantic relations of predicate-object phrases were more complex than Middle Chinese. They also found that many kinds of words could act as verbs, which also gradually disappeared after later Han Dynasty. Feng (2005, 2014a) first figured out those predicate-object phrases expressing involving relations were generated by light verb movement, and defined the non-preposition structures in Archaic Chinese. Following this kind of analysis, this thesis discusses the structure, diachronic development, semantics interpretation and syntactic effects of non-preposition structures in Pre-Qin Chinese. The paper argues that non-preposition structures are different from the preposition-object structures syntactically and semantically. Non-preposition structures are a kind of light verb movement sturctures. They could introduce more thematic roles, such as target, affectee and complex involver. It shows that the thematic relation of non-preposition structures is doing an action or experiencing a state involving a participant, and can be reinterpreted into specific meanings according to the concrete contexts. This paper also claims that after the Han Dynasty, because the light verb movement was no longer syntactically productive, non-preposition structures were replaced by other structures, or disappeared. Few of them continued to exist. Thus, misinterpretation occurred, representing reanalysis of syntactic structures. Because of the productivity of non-preposition structures, not only many kinds of words could perform as predicates, such as nouns, adjectives, and intransitive verbs, but also transitive verbs could appear in double object constructions. Meanwhile, predicate-object phrases, single object constructions and double object constructions which were generated by non-preposition, could be interpreted into a variety of thematic relations. However, since light verbs became phonetic and thus could not trigger movement any longer, non-preposition structures were not productive, and those phenomena decreased after later Han Dynasty. This paper proposes new analyses of on the syntactic nature, semantic interpretation, and diachronic change of non-preposition structures, laying the groundwork for the future exploration about light verb movement in Ancient Chinese.
