The dissertation examines the market for medieval art in Paris and New York between 1906 and 1949 through an analysis of the activities of the Brummer Gallery. Founded in 1906 by Joseph Brummer, his brothers Imre and Ernest joined him in Paris and later assisted him with the Gallery's New York branch. The business papers of this renowned international art-dealing business, held by The Cloisters Museum and Archives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, serve as the primary source for this study. This investigation begins with a review of the history of collecting medieval art from its beginnings in Europe in the modern era to the turn of twentieth-century Paris, followed by a discussion of the related trends in the United States by the first American collectors of medieval art. Analyses of the personalities and interests of the Brummer brothers reveal their motivations in establishing a gallery and a particular interest in medieval art. A discussion of select clients of the Gallery forms a major component of the dissertation. Comparisons with other leading dealers frames the Gallery's position within the international art world. Finally, the significant personal and professional relationships the Brummer brothers formed is also explored, providing evidence of their far-reaching influence on the formation of medieval art collections in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. A catalogue of medieval works acquired by The Met, the world's largest repository of medieval art with Brummer provenances, demonstrates the Gallery's sources, the complex and sophisticated nature of their activities, and the quality of the works they obtained. The dissertation serves as a study of the Brummers' unique perspective and foremost position in the world of buying, selling, and collecting medieval art. It also addresses wider questions about the market for medieval art in Europe and America during the first half of the twentieth century, but particularly between 1914 and 1949, a period that has not previously been the subject of comprehensive study in the history of collecting medieval art.
