This dissertation outlines some of the key aspects of experimental ecocinema in order to further define and refine the broad goals, strategies, and commitments of this emergent tradition. While there has been considerable and increasing focus on ecocinema studies as a mode of critical analysis of a body of work that spans mainstream Hollywood and documentary cinemas, less focus has been paid to so-called "experimental" works and the uniqueness of their contribution to the area. In order to advance ecocinema studies I trace the contours of a particular tradition that emerged in relation - and often, response - to more mainstream modes of eco-media production. I track parallels between three main historical currents: first, the emergence of newfound popular understandings of ecology itself - and newfound understandings of more subtle, invisible, and pervasive ecological crises - and the media representational crises that ensued to account for this new knowledge; second, the rapidly increasing production of eco-media generally in the post-WWII period, and the dialogues that experimental works formulated with such trends; and third, the critical and ontological questions raised by various ecocinematic interventions about the production of a visual culture of ecology that strives to be intersectional, historical, and environmentally just. Ultimately, I propose that seeking out environmental justice in ecocinematic images themselves should be a priority for media practitioners and scholars alike in the current milieu of social ecological crisis.
