The majority of mate selection research focuses on heterosexual mate selection while neglecting lesbians, gay males, bisexual, and others (LGB+s). This neglect stems partly heteronormative perspectives and from sociocultural biases that same-sex relationships are immoral and unequal to heterosexual relationships. Only within the last 20 years have researchers begun to study LGB+ preferred mate traits, none using the Ideal Standards Model (ISM), so the traits LGB+s prefer in an ideal mate remain unknown and understudied. In their pivotal 1999 study, Fletcher, Simpson, Thomas, and Giles created the Ideal Standards Model which posits that heterosexuals utilize a set of ideal partner and relationship traits to assess the prospects for a relationship. The researchers discovered that heterosexuals prefer three traits in a partner: warmth/trustworthiness, vitality/physical health, and social status/resources. Also, heterosexuals prefer two traits in a relationship: intimacy/loyalty and passion. Given the ISM's exclusion of LGB+s, the purpose of this study was to examine the ISM's utility with an LGB+ population. Results of the MANOVAs showed there were no significant differences between non-heterosexual's partner/relationship preferences and heterosexual's preferences as well as no difference between heterosexual females and lesbians/female bisexuals. Additionally, the results showed that there was a significant difference for social status/resources and vitality/attractiveness between heterosexual females and heterosexual males. Finally, the results showed there were no significant differences between lesbian's partner/relationship preferences and gay males/bisexuals. Keywords: ideal standards, heterosexual partner/relationship preferences, LGB partner/relationship preferences, lesbians, gay males, bisexuals.
