This research looks at the advice Christian parents of lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered (LGBT) children would give to other parents and children during the disclosure process. Disclosure is considered a milestone event in sexual identity development. Negative parental reactions that occur post-disclosure can cause mental health problems in LGBT adolescents and young adults. This descriptive study utilizes archival data provided by the Marin Foundation. Ninety interviews were appraised for advice the participant would give to a parent in the disclosure process and the child when disclosing. In regards to advice to other parents, participants offered suggestions within the following domains: parenting advice, religious advice, specific cautions, identify sources of support, reaction at the time of disclosure, preparation for post-disclosure, and religious convictions. Moreover, the most salient piece of advice was for parents to demonstrate unconditional love towards the child. The following domains were found in the advice that parents offered the sexual minority youth during disclosure including preparing and planning for disclosure, religious advice, engaging in productive communication, being authentic to one's self, how to respond to parental reactions, support and resources, demonstrating unconditional love towards the parents, and maintaining familial relationships. The most recommended suggestion was for the child to anticipate their family's reaction and to keep conversations productive. Implications for clinicians, parents of sexual minority youth and the youth themselves, and directions for future research are discussed.
