Peru's musical traditions and cultures come from three different regions, which contain different musical styles and influences. This thesis introduces a selection of Peruvian traditional vocal repertoire written for classically trained female voices. As a soprano, the author constantly searches for interesting and "out of the box" selections to perform for different purposes, whether they be Mexican, Argentinian or Spanish song collections that give vocal and performance challenges. Unfortunately, there is not an existing Peruvian song anthology and for that reason it is important to introduce these diverse styles and rhythms to a contemporary western audience. The author is not attempting to present full historical research of this topic, but rather to introduce the songs within the context of the different cultures and timeframes in which the songs were written. This research will follow examples of standard repertoire anthologies such as those by Carol Kimball and Suzanne Rhodes-Draayer. Characteristics of each Peruvian style, along with performance practice, traditional context of the pieces, proper language translations, range and tessitura information will be included. Much of this music is based on Peruvian folk traditions that have been passed down through oral/aural practices. These traditions will be briefly discussed but available published scores will be utilized. By providing access to these publications it is hoped that this short exploration of Peruvian song will pique the interest of teachers and singers. Lastly, it is important to note that the categories in this thesis were chosen by the author based on her experience as a Peruvian native and were discovered in the process of researching the material.
