Differentiation of instruction is an approach to teaching and learning that focuses on the unique needs of each child. Teachers are required to meet the diverse needs of all students in the classroom and to accomplish this task, the educator is required to assess students' levels and implement activities to promote their academic growth and development. The problem addressed in this study was the fact that the advanced learner seems to be negatively impacted, as the teachers perceive that it is easier to meet the needs of the average and the struggling learner. The purpose then of this study was to determine if differentiation of instruction was fully explored, used and developed towards encouraging the academic growth and intellectual development of the advanced learner in selected middle schools. Data were gathered, using interviews, focus groups and classroom observations from 20 participants. Results from the data collected revealed that the participants had a general understanding of what differentiation of instruction was and some of the academic needs of the advanced leaner. From the coded themes, the four challenges emerged were obtaining enough resources such as computers for the classroom, lack of parental involvement, the availability of professional workshops specifically designed with the advanced learner in mind, as well as insufficient budgets. Recommendations for future practice included meaningful feedback should be given to both teachers and principals after classroom observations have occurred; creation of a mentorship program designed to help teachers to implement differentiation of instruction; purposeful professional development designed with the needs of the advanced learner as the key focus; and creation of parent-teacher actives implemented to boost parental involvement. Recommendations for future research included creating more resources to meet the unique needs of the advanced leaner, research should be conducted over an extended period of time, as well as including the perspective of a larger group of teachers and principals.
