This study has a threefold mission. It first highlights lesser-known contemporary North American composers, John Luther Adams, Stephen Lias, Derek Charke, Judith Cloud, and Catherine McMichael. Like numerous composers before them, these individuals have been inspired by their environment. A brief background of each composer is provided, and their selected works are analyzed by referencing music scores, recordings, program notes, and the author's personal correspondence with the composers through email. Secondly, this study identifies modern environmental crises in North America through ecocritical musical commentary. The vocal works analyzed in this study reflect, to varying degrees, each composer's experiences in and of nature, and suggest relevant connections to ecological issues. Published writings, interviews, and the author's email correspondence frame each composers' philosophical insights and artistic choices in light of current environmental concerns. Lastly, this study suggests practical ways for implementing ecocentric repertoire in a studio or performance setting. Contemporary art song, especially of ecological relevance, merits equal consideration in the standard canon. Although the compositions analyzed in this thesis are appropriate for collegiate and professional levels, they serve as models for choosing less common music that encourages environmental consciousness and fosters ecological literacy in instruction and performance.
