Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth in the US and existing research has shown that sexual minority youth-which include lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals among others- are about three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Although studies exist that aim to better understand this disparity in suicide attempts, findings are often presented in theoretical frameworks not designed specifically to explain suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The two studies that compromise this dissertation: a) evaluate the applicability of the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS) to suicide attempts among LGB youth, and b) use the IPTS as a theoretical framework to understand if and how two known risk factors in the general youth population (i.e., substance misuse and nonsuicidal self-injury; NSSI) are related to suicide attempts and the severity of suicide attempts among LGB youth. Data come from a sample of 835 LGB-identified cisgender youth, ages 15-21, who completed paper and pencil surveys from November 2011 to October 2012, in three U.S. cities; 16.5 percent of participants reported one or more prior suicide attempts. Path analyses were utilized to assess if constructs of the IPTS model mediate potential relationships between the designated risk factor (i.e., NSSI or substance misuse) and suicide attempt and suicide attempt severity. Results indicated that selected parts of the IPTS model are useful in explaining how LGB youths' experiences with stigma and victimization may increase the risk for suicide attempts. Additionally, both NSSI and substance misuse were related to suicide attempts among LGB youth. Specifically, NSSI was primarily a direct predictor of suicide attempt while the relationship between substance misuse and suicide attempt was fully mediated by both suicidal desire and acquired capability for suicide, two primary constructs of the IPTS model. Of the two risk factors, only NSSI was related to severity of suicide attempts among a subsample of attempters. NSSI and substance misuse did not interact to predict suicide attempt. Results are discussed with attention to directions for future research and implications for the practice of counseling psychology.
