Zimbabwe struggled against colonialism and the minority regime of Ian Smith for almost one century. At independence in 1980, Zimbabwe joined the international community of nations. There was tremendous international goodwill and hope that Zimbabwe would stand out as a beacon of freedom and self-sufficiency for emerging nations. This optimism which had been sustained for a good part of the post-colonial era, however, was dashed and replaced by feelings of despair and betrayal. At the outset, the reasons for the contradictory scenarios were evident. On the one hand, the weight of the lingering impact of colonialism that bequeathed a legacy of landlessness, a distorted bimodal economic system and a poor sociopolitical structure posed colossal challenges to a fledgling nation. Yet aspects of the inherited structure of the economy and society provided enough grounds for optimism on the other. Despite the inherent difficulties it constituted, the agricultural sector offered opportunities for the development goals for Zimbabwe. Ironically, the land issue represented by the bungled project of the reform policy became the central issue for the demise of the vision and hope to make Zimbabwe a shining example of African Independence.
