The current study investigated the mental health effects of the Trump Era on the Hispanic/Latino population in order to provide insight to clinicians who work with individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, or stress related specifically to their immigration status or that of a loved one. The participants in this study were Hispanic/Latino individuals age 18 years and older who have experienced the Trump Era. The study used a total of 97 participant responses to a SurveyMonkey survey available online in both Spanish and English versions. The survey asked participants different questions to assess different mental health symptoms, and included questions from the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-4 to assess for symptoms of depression and anxiety, the Brief COPE to identify coping skills, and the General Self-Efficacy (GSE) scale to identify self-efficacy beliefs along with other immigration-related questions. Results indicate that 58% of participants fell under the moderate to severe range with symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. Lack of access restricts undocumented individuals' ability to obtain health services and can lead to poor medical and mental health outcomes. Martinez et al. (2015) stressed that research on antiimmigration laws has had substantial effects on the mental health outcomes of undocumented immigrants, refugees, and other vulnerable classes (i.e., sex workers, LGBT). Additionally, these laws affect undocumented children who experience distinctive challenges, including barriers to education along with fear over arrest, imprisonment, and detention of family members due to immigration status, leading to greater numbers in child trauma and harm.
