American artist Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) and American-Norwegian sociologist Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929) reflect the behaviors of American society during the Gilded Age through their own metier. Veblen's book The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study of Institutions observes the socioeconomic paradigms concurrent with the financial influx of the Gilded Age. Eakins's subject matter illustrates the contemporary habits of consumerism predicted by Veblen. These include the sovereignty of women in culture and class, formal propriety and cultural behavior, organized religion, and the institution of sports. Each chapter examines one of the four principles with selected works from Thomas Eakins. The goal of cross-examining Veblen's and Eakins's work is to discover similarities and patterns that overlap. Are these similarities and overlapping patterns coincidental or intentional?
