Within the United States military, women and men are currently proportionally promoted to officer ranks equally. However, given that the military has been a historically male-dominated field, it is possible that although women and men are overtly provided the same opportunities, implicit gender bias exists, causing male and female leaders to be viewed differently. This study seeks to examine whether the public views male officers as better suited and more competent for officer positions, and more specifically, whether the public's perception of officers' competency depends based on their own sex-role identification as traditional or egalitarian.
