In the closing chapters of World War II, the United States emerged among the community of nations to create, lead, and guard an international order. This hegemonic position has been termed as the American Century, a period of time in which the United States has enjoyed a position of authority in global politics, economic advancements, and cultural influence. In the past few decades, a unique competition has emerged in which the monumental rise of China is predicted to overtake the United States. With this potential overtake, the rising power that is China will seek not only a greater role in the world but aspire to play a greater part in shaping the international order in accordance with its interests. This situation in which a rising power has the ability to displace the dominant power is known as a Power Transition. According to Graham Allison, in the past five hundred years, there have been sixteen power transitions in which twelve power transitions have resulted in war and only four have resulted in peace. The challenge before us is to determine a path forward to avoid the dangerous likelihood of war in the Chinese and American power transition. In the various areas of competition, the repeated hostile incidents between Chinese and American military assets in the South China Sea serves as the likeliest point of conflict between these two nations. In examining the sixteen power transitions, three cases have been selected that resemble the challenges confronting the current Chinese and American power transition. The three selected power transitions include the United Kingdom and Germany (1871-1914), the United Kingdom and the United States (1856-1945), and the Soviet Union and the United States (1940-1991). These three cases will be examined through the power transition theories of Organski, Robert Gilpin, and Steven Chan in order to determine the factors that led to war or peace. By highlighting these important lessons drawn from the past, recommendations can be made to the mounting tensions in the South China Sea and insights to secure a peaceful power transition between China and the United States.
