In my thesis, I will examine Henry David Thoreau's Walden (1854) and Margaret Atwood'sThe Year of the Flood (2009) as texts that critique the concept of societal progress via the postmodern philosophy known as Degrowth economics. Degrowth argues that an ever-growing economy is the source of many economic and cultural problems, especially environmental destruction. Thinkers from the Degrowth tradition challenge our uncritical assumption that the economy should always grow, and our personal wealth should always increase. Thoreau and Atwood offer scathing critiques of cultures of progress, particularly arguing that continuous economic progress will cause environmental ruin. Through the critiques of their respective cultures, Thoreau and Atwood unknowingly but powerfully propose blueprints for a Degrowth economy. The pairing of these two texts is informed by a critical methodology of looking back and looking ahead. Thoreau's Walden, written in 1854, responds directly to the conditions of an industrializing United States. Atwood'sThe Year of the Flood (hereby referred to as TYOTF), set in the dystopian near-future, extrapolates contemporary neoliberal practices into a dystopia. Since the two authors have not yet been paired in scholarship, examining their similar social preoccupations will make for an interesting and original analysis. Thoreau and Atwood critique dominant modes of progress: Thoreau by suggesting the individual is superior to an economic system by meeting his own needs, and Atwood by presenting us the dystopian extreme of our current neoliberal logics. In my thesis, I will employ Degrowth as a theoretical lens to identify the ways in which these two authors critique dominant modes of neoliberal progress in their respective periods. In the process, I hope to establish the intersection between Degrowth theory and practice.
