Mentorship has been examined in various capacities within academia and industry with minimal thought to the needs of the vocational education student. The literature has provided insight into advanced-level and business-level mentorships as well as how those relationships have furthered the causes of the students that have participated in them. However, very few references related to mentorship in vocational education programs in the higher education setting can be found. This study attempts to shed light on the features that make for a successful mentorship relationship within a highly technical education program by exploring the mentors' lived experiences. The results of this case study revealed a consensus among the mentors on their lived experiences, pedagogy, and opinions on mentorship within a vocational education program. The following six themes emerged: (a) students must have confidence-building, hands-on learning, (b) mentors use adaptive learning with their mentees to develop relationships and enhance learning, (c) clear and open communication is key to a successful relationship, (d) leadership must be demonstrated by the mentor but also developed within the mentees, (e) mentorships provide leadership both within and outside the classroom to satisfy all aspects of student development, and (f) it does not matter what the mentor does, if the mentee does not want the relationship it will not work. This study also demonstrated that further investigation is needed in relation to the mentee population, as current literature has marginalized the thoughts of the mentee in relation to the mentorship relationship. The study also revealed the need for mentors to listen to the needs of the mentees and adapt to the changing student demographic to create an environment that is conducive to the needs of the mentees.
