Grit, the perseverance and the passion and consistency of interest toward a goal over time, has gained attention as a construct related to success across many settings. The literature proposed further investigation to determine how grit varied across context or tasks, and limited studies have examined grit as a domain-specific construct. The current study assessed the psychometric properties of a domain-specific grit scale of items adapted to reflect exercise. Participants (N = 383) completed an online questionnaire consisting of preliminary Grit-E items as well as other trait-based scales (Grit-S, SERES, BFI, and CMSDS) and items related to exercise activity behavior. Results of an EFA indicated the Grit-E explained 71.13% of the variance and consisted of primarily one main factor and a less substantial second factor. Factors Exercise Perseverance of Effort and Exercise Consistency of Interest accounted for 62.40% of the variance and 8.73%, respectively. The Grit-E demonstrated good reliability and content, concurrent, and construct validity. Hierarchical regressions indicated the Grit-E explained exercise activity beyond global grit, conscientiousness, exercise self-efficacy, and social desirability. The results of the present study suggested the Grit-E reflected the underpinnings of grit with noteworthy limitations regarding the interpretation of lower order factors. Consistent with the literature, findings supported that grit differed across domains. Limitations regarding the scale's factor structure and interpretability are considered, and the implications of the study including grits' potential malleability are discussed.
